There are many contenders for the title of the 20th century’s “greatest opera,” and Alban Berg’s transgressive magnum opus Lulu is undoubtedly one of them. Love, eroticism, and death have always been stalwart themes of opera, yet Lulu still has the ability to surprise audiences through its unflinching examination of these themes — in part due to Berg’s incorporation of a complex, full-orchestral palindrome at the heart of the work.

Have you ever gone back to your childhood stomping grounds and felt goosebumps from some profound sense of immediate nostalgia? Do you ever get that same feeling watching television or a film?

If you sample someone else’s music, make sure you’ve covered all your bases too. Reach out to the original songwriter to discuss splits and obtain a mechanical license to use their sample in your music, and then register and administer the percentage that you both agree upon. Don’t find yourself in a sticky situation — do your homework and know how to properly go about using samples.

In this new series of spotlights, we’re introducing our full roster of Soundfly Mentors so you can choose who you want to work with on your next project!

“I have taken three courses with Soundfly and have been very impressed by the quality of the course and more importantly, the quality of the feedback. The deep feedback and analysis I get from my mentors has been wonderful. I do not ever recall getting this level of feedback nor support in previous online courses (or live courses for that matter.)”

Touring is great. But it can very quickly turn into exhaustive, monotonous work. Here are 10 great tips to keep things interesting and fun on the road.

Lalita says she’s seen a lot of criticism of people leaving during this very critical time. But for her, the best way to help — now and in the long term — is from outside. Not everyone can afford to leave the island, and many will choose to stay to help rebuild, regardless of their financial situation.

All of our mentored courses come with six weeks of one-on-one professional coaching and feedback on your work. It’s like having a personal trainer, but for music! Whether you’re interested to dive deep into a topic covered by one of our in-depth courses like Songwriting For Producers, Modern Mix Techniques, Sight Singing and Harmony Essentials or The Creative Power of Advanced Harmony, or just to work with a Soundfly Mentor directly to achieve a specific goal, we can help you succeed.

National endowment for the arts

I mostly approached this as “soloing” with the a cappella, using the instrumental as my “rhythm section.” But I did some improvising with the instrumental too, by looping, and by jumping around between cue points. I don’t consider this to be a polished work of art or anything, but I discovered some pretty cool sounds, even at my basic skill level. So I’m excited to see where this leads.

Fortunately, Karol Faragalli, a realtor friend of mine, was a tremendous help in our case. While many realtors got gun shy when they realized our difficulties getting a loan, she stood by us through the process and worked tirelessly to connect us with the right bank.

Whatever the case, holiday albums do seem to be a great way for musicians to pull in a bit of extra cash, especially in a year when an artist hasn’t released significant new material. Holiday songs are mostly public domain, since their copyrights have lapsed, which means more royalties for the singer. These albums often “hit the shelves” (that won’t be a term for much longer…) as early as October, in order to give them a bit of time to build publicity and airtime. Labels will start ramping up marketing towards mid-late November, right as Black Friday and holiday gift fever starts to set in.
