I love this quote from one of my favorite songwriters. Have you ever heard a song that captures exactly what you’re feeling? A song that makes you say, “YES! That’s exactly it, I just wasn’t able to express it myself!” Well, my friends, that’s one of the many joys of songwriting. So yes, you have a responsibility to help others with your words and melodies. Some days you might feel like you’re not helping anyone, but remember: The world needs the magic of music. And if musicians didn’t exist, we would never have that feeling of catharsis. And I don’t want to live in that world.

To add more character to your drums, try panning each piece in your kit in a thoughtful way. This will help keep sounds from getting muddled and will be great for later when you need to differentiate instruments like the kick and bass. This also gives you the opportunity to spice up you drum part with a bit of unpredictability. For example, if your kit includes claps, each hit could switch from falling on the left or right side.

Producers: You are also songwriters in your own right. What’s the difference anyway? You are the one making compositional decisions with every click. You should make sure to negotiate publishing percentages where you can. Register your splits properly and collect the money you are due.
He goes on: “And the next two notes on the hierarchy are E and G.” Those are the third and fifth notes of the C major scale, they make up the basis for the C major chord, and so they are of secondary importance.
Horizontal hemiola, on the other hand, is when the patterns of three and two happen not simultaneously but unfold across time. This can be as simple as taking the two lines and putting them next to each other rather than on top of each other (like in the vertical arrangement). For example:
The best way to keep fans engaged is to go back and see them regularly. In past articles I’ve spoke about the importance of building regionally before trying to tour in markets farther away from your home. This is one of the main reasons for that point.

These modern composers need no introduction. Their names are likely already on your favorite Spotify playlists, and rolling down with the credits of your favorite films and television shows. Their work and continued efforts to build the community of new composers and new audiences have come to define the new horizons of the first almost twenty years of this century’s wealth of concert music.
This is obviously a matter of little importance, since the notes which form the mode are the same, the only difference would be which scale we decide to compare it to.
To find out just how important, I interviewed two experts: Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Lethbridge, Bryn Hughes, and PhD student at Queens University, Anja Cui. Both actively research music cognition, drawing from music theory and behavioral science as well as cognitive psychology, and as Cui puts it, “Basically how people listen to music and what happens when they’re listening to music.”
Thinking about what’s in it for the venue can also help you learn how to better sell your band in other marketing arenas. For example, if you’re angling to land a show opening for a bigger band touring through your town, the economy of that inquiry is pretty much in favor of the venue, the band, and their management. If you’re lucky and experiencing some real momentum, maybe you’ll get asked to join the bill, but otherwise, it’s important to know what cards you hold in your hand, and which to play.
My next move was to warp out a human performance over my beats to hear what it would sound like. I tried both the Wasser and Poppen, and the Poppen sounded cooler. I did continual A/B comparisons with the MIDI version to line everything up by ear.
